How To Change Security Settings For Java On Mac

At the top of this Java control panel you’ll need to click on the Security button at the top. Then you’ll see the security slider, as above. Slide that bad boy on down to Medium, then hit Apply.

In a nutshell, I have a java app that crashes in java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError and I'm looking to see if my OS/Java settings might be causing this error. I cannot change the security settings in the Java Control Panel (OSX 10.8.3). There is a checkbox that says 'Enable Java content in the browser', and I can check it, but when I click in the Apply button, it unchecks it again (looks like a bad joke, why the check is enabled if I cannot change it?!). Furthermore, I cannot modify the security level options since they are always grayed out independently of what I do.

There is a way to modify these security settings? Below a picture of the Java Control Panel as it is shown in my machine.
