I'm not sure if all versions support it, but I have used it on VMWare 9-11 and it works great. Basically, there is no native support for OS X in VMWare, thus no VMWare tools for OS X. VMWare tools is what is installed in new VM that provides the drivers and better interaction between the host and guest. What the unlocker does is provide VMWare with the tools needed to run OS X in a VM, so that it can, for example, stick to your host machine's screen resolution. It also makes that VMWare provide the actual bootloader that are used on Macs, so there is no need to install a custom one, like Chameleon/Chimera/Clover.

I count on VirtualBox because, a) In VirtualBox 5.0.0, even USB devices cannot be enumerated on El Capitan. However, VB 5.0.1 test build made a progress that they can be found now. B) USB function is the weakest feature of VB, comparing to those competitors. On Windows / OS X 10.10, I often have to restart my guest or even the host to make a USB device work. And c) Parallels Desktop just released version 11.

Notice that it's not listed in the list of supported operating systems in the manual. El Capitan will be supported in some 5.0.x update and then it will be reflected in the documentation.

Until then, what works and doesn't work is to a large extent a reflection of what Apple did or didn't change in the OS. However, if you have some solid business reasons explaining why supporting non-paying users running unreleased host software should be a priority for Oracle, we'd love to hear it.
